WATCH: Healthcare, a Generation’s Future, and the Role of Education

In the third episode of VAS News Chat, I join Teresa Manning, Policy Director at the National Association of Scholars and President of its Virginia affiliate, to examine the parallels between the healthcare and education systems, how generational differences shape perceptions of hardship, the anger many young people feel in response to the exponential rise in the cost of living and other essential expenses, and the role of education in fueling radicalism. The discussion also explores the influence of “diversity, equity, and inclusion” ideology, focusing on racial bias in medical school admissions and practices such as “weight inclusivity.” Finally, they consider how a liberal arts education might help citizens live more virtuously, concluding with reflections on the need for virtuous citizens and a reevaluation of societal values.

The articles referenced in this podcast include “The Damage from DEI Will Last a Generation. Eradicating It Is Still Essential,” “Young Americans Are Right to Be Angry—But Their Education Keeps the Cycle of Frustration Going,” and “Long Live the Liberal Arts.”

Since the posting of the third episode on YouTube, Minding the Campus has expanded on two of the topics Teresa and I discussed. Rob Jenkins asks whether Gen Z might save America, while my own overview of medical schools shows how DEI has reshaped medical education.
